Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek mathematician who lived from about B.C. Today he is best known for his contributions to geography, mathematics, and astronomy. Educated in Athens, Greece, and in Alexandria, Egypt, Eratosthenes was appointed director of the great Library at Alexandria in B.C., where he served for several years. Eratosthenes was an Ancient Greek scientist born in the town of Cyrene in about BC. Cyrene, then a Greek city, is now the town of Shahhat in Libya. Eratosthenes was educated in philosophy and mathematics in Athens. We do not know what he looked like. The image above is from a painting by Bernardo Strozzi in the year , nineteen centuries.
Eratosthenes’ shadow. That is, until a man named Eratosthenes devised a simple yet elegant way to calculate the size of the Earth using nothing but the sun and some mad geometry skills. This is the first modern edition and first English translation of one of the earliest and most important works in the history of geography, the third-century Geographika of Eratosthenes. In this work, which for the first time described the geography of the entire inhabited world as it was then known, Eratosthenes of Kyrene (ca.
BC) invented the discipline. Eratosthenes of Cyrene (/ ɛr ə ˈ t ɒ s θ ə n iː z /; Greek: Ἐρατοσθένης ὁ Κυρηναῖος, romanized: Eratosthénēs ho Kurēnaĩos, IPA: [eratostʰénɛːs]; c. BC – c. / BC) was a Greek polymath: a mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer, and music was a man of learning, becoming the chief librarian at the Library of : BC, Cyrene.

Eratosthenes, Greek scientific writer, astronomer, and poet, who made the first measurement of the size of Earth for which any details are known.
He was also the director of the Library of Alexandria. His only surviving work is Catasterisms, a book about constellations. Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c.
BCE– or BCE) was an ancient Greek mathematician, poet, and astronomer who is known as the father of thenes was the first person to use the word "geography" and other geographical terms that are still in use today, and his efforts to calculate the circumference of the Earth and the distance from the Earth to the Sun Author: Matt Rosenberg.

Kapitel: Sieb des Eratosthenes. Sieve of Eratosthenes. Sieve of Eratosthenes is used to find prime numbers up to some predefined integer n. For sure, we can just test all the numbers in range from 2 to n for primality using some approach, but it is quite inefficient.
Sieve of Eratosthenes is a simple algorithm to find prime numbers. Buy Das Sieb des Eratosthenes;: Eine Studie uber die naturlichen Zahlen on FREE SHIPPING on qualified orders. What is the Sieve of Eratosthenes. A prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that can be divided without remainder only by itself and by 1.
Natural numbers n that can be divided by a number less than n and greater than 1 are composite numbers. The Sieve of Eratosthenes identifies all prime numbers up to a given number n as follows.
I read up on the sieve of Eratosthenes while solving a question on Project Euler. I'm sure you guys know which question im talking about. So here's the thing. My code manages to show all the primes under 1 million correctly. However when i try the same implementation for 2 million it's giving me a segmentation fault.

Chapter January Eratosthenes of Cyrene ( – BC) was a 3rd century BC Greek mathematician, geographer and was head of the Library of Alexandria from BC until his death: this was the most important library of the ancient world.
According to the Suda, his contemporaries nicknamed him Beta, (the second letter of the Greek alphabet), because he was the second Born: BC, Cyrene.

Introduction: In Show Math, students will learn how in BC, the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth using simple geometry and a few measurements. His estimate of the circumference was remarkably accurate—to within 2% of File Size: KB.
Archimedes was a correspondent and though probably Archimedes did not rate him as a true equal, that’s a good sign. Like Euclid, he worked in the Library at Alexandria which for over years was the important place for mathematics. Eratosthenes’ claim to fame is that he measured the size of the Earth to a good degree of accuracy.
Most of what is known about Eratosthenes’ geometric argument comes from the writings of Cleomedes, in the first century BCE.
Eratosthenes’ argument, as described by Cleomedes, gives the circumference of the Earth as approximatelystades.Eratosthenes of Cyrene ( – BC) was a 3rd century BC Greek mathematician, geographer and was head of the Library of Alexandria from BC until his death: this was the most important library of the ancient world.
